Summer Carnival ’92 Recca サマーカーニバル’92 烈火 NES FC

Posted by John as Shmups

Without a doubt the best and HARDEST shmup on Nintendo’s 8-bit wonder. Probably one of the very first manic shmups that are now more common in today’s breed. This one is definitely not for the one who needs anger managment.

Until Game Reproductions started selling their copies of this, this was one of the rarest games on the console. It had a very limited release in the Japanese market. I think most of the original Famicom cartridges of this were given out in Naxat Soft’s 1992 Summer Carnival shmup tournament. I am not sure.

This game is …
This game is totally awesome.

Area 7 is near …
Area 7 is near impossible though.

This game isn’t …
This game isn’t actually as hard as you make it out to be. It just appears difficult because there are lots of things on the screen at once and the background moves very fast. I’ve played much more difficult shooters on the NES. I’m not great at shoot em ups but I can beat the first 4 or 5 levels in this game without getting hit.

I think he’s …
I think he’s talking about how they coil in and out.

He needs to use his imagination more.

This game reminds …
This game reminds me greatly of Battle Squadron, except Battle Squadron gave more room for survival.

Except for the fact it only gave you one hit point =P

Reminds me of …
Reminds me of blazing lazers

I remember playing …
I remember playing this game on an emulator, had to use about 2935787345 savestates just to get through it, mostly because of the flood of ships and bullets.

If you think those are hard, wait until you get to the final boss. Erratic movement followed by 300% more bullets than most other bosses fire.

I didn’t discover …
I didn’t discover this game until I came upon a website reviewing rare or overlooked games. It just so happened I already had the game inside a zip of NES roms for more than a year. Great game. I wouldn’t imagine how interesting the programming could be on the old 8-bit system.

What do you mean?

Ow, these sounds …
Ow, these sounds hurt me ears after a while…

But this looks really fun. Reminds me a bit of Crisis Force.

Yes, it’s quite …
Yes, it’s quite common. The PAL NES runs at only 1.66 MHz as opposed to 1.79 for the NTSC. In the early days, most designers did just handle the framerate difference between the formats by making them run at different speeds. Movies like Star Wars and such tend to be slightly shorter in PAL than they are in NTSC as well because the film runs slightly faster.

7:19-LASERS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!!!

Well, I suppose I …
Well, I suppose I may be wrong about this. I have a PAL copy of this game and it runs slower. But then it seems extremely weird, that game update cycle is not locked to time, but to a frame rate instead. Anyone ever heard of NTSC movies being faster/shorter? I never did.

Pink Godzilla has a …
Pink Godzilla has a real copy of the game and it ran the exact same speed as this video. Plus, the game is a NTSC game to begin with.

Nice find. I’ll …
Nice find. I’ll check it out.

By the way: you and …
By the way: you and many others are running the game FASTER, than it was supposed to be. Switch emulation options to PAL. It supposed to be approx. 16% slower. I know how this game runs in hardware. Most gamers simply don’t know that and emulation in most emulators set to NTSC by default (which, i guess, also works, but not in this case). I fact, most of the games I’ve seen on YouTube are being played faster, that they were intended to.

Search “Recca Pure” …
Search “Recca Pure” on google

this is a hack of the game! it unlocks some hidden modes
unavailable in the original game (like 3 more levels)

Thanks!

I am looking forward to it. Good luck!

I first saw this …
I first saw this game in 1993 and I was shocked. It looked like NOTHING I’ve seen before. This is definitely THE best shmup for NES ever! I’ve never thought anything like that could be possible on good old NES. It took quite a lot of time, but i beat it :) No emulators, no saves, nothing of that crap — that was of a job. Now being a game designer, I’m thinking of creating something like that for PC…

This game looks …
This game looks awesome!!

nice man
nice man

This game be going …
This game be going crazy with the background effects and shift in scrolling directions. I bet they threw all that in on purpose to throw off the Summer Carnival contestants’ concentration
