“Blue Attack!”: A Must-Have Game For Iphone and Ipod

At only $1.99, Blue Attack invades iphones and ipods which can easily win you over with its simple concept of a really solid shooter and its hefty amount of “replayability.”

Developer John Kooistra adds another simple and fun shooter as a follow up to Blue Defense (App Store) released back in November.

Blue Attack takes the offense and track down the Red invaders from the original game. Developer Kooistra has added a very meaningful degree of complexity to the game by offering upgradable ships alongside with new and improved weapons and capabilities.

Get to choose a carrier you must defend accompanied by a number of wing men that offers additional firepower to destroy the enemy ships. Each enemy formation contains a “core” that must be destroyed. Your goal is to battle each wave and annihilate all enemies before they destroy you first.

The touch and accelerometer controls are found in this shmup are effectively implemented. Unlike traditional scrolling shooters, you are afforded with gain full directional control and master your ship’s navigation in order to deliver a focused stream of firepower against your enemies. There are two modes of play: campaign and unlimited modes which both offer more than enough game play and opportunity to hone your skills.

The best feature of Blue Attack is the ship upgrade system. When you successful overcome after each wave of attackers, you achieve “resources” to spend on upgrading your ship. For example, the upgrades of having more wingmen can be purchased to increase your firepower. A number of other upgrades ranging from bombs, extra lives, faster speed, and improved handling are available. Upgrades appear to be well thought and balanced so you’ll enjoy testing out your new abilities.

Blue Attack is one interesting game with its combination of various play modes, 15 series of levels (or planets) and great upgrades. You get your money’s worth with this winner.

Split Em Up Nice

Split ‘Em Up is a fun and casual shmup that will make you pound your space bar out of sheer excitement. Just a word of caution:  Split ‘Em Up is highly addictive especially if you are a fan of Galaga or Space Invaders. Learn more on how to play this shmup.

Shoot advancing alien hordes with your dual cannons by pressing your spacebar button. Split em up by using up or down arrow key to toggle, space to shoot down lasers and left and right arrows to move.

With your handy pair of guns, get to slide around the four walls of the arena using the left or right arrow keys or up and down keys.

You can easily activate split mode by pressing up or down, where your turrets separate and move around the walls in opposite directions. The split mode is an excellent strategy to use on some of the nastier enemies appearing and allowing you to focus all your fire on one target.

Always keep your eye on your shield, use all four walls, and look out for baddies with heavier attacks. When they do, the walls will crumble and eventually break, and you will easily end up trapped in an untenable position.

Set aside some fun-loving time to pound on your spacebar playing this 2d shooter.

R-type Dimensions Achievements Posted

To ring in the New Year, the achievements for R-type dimensions have been posted. This could mean that the game is nearing completion and right on scheduled for the early January of 2009.  The R-type achievement posted is just one of the many surprises Microsoft has and will release for 2009.

Xbox Live Arcade‘s record-breaking year continues to be incredible and more incredible with the long list of games coming out in 2009. Microsoft listed the following downloadable Xbox 360 games including R-type Dimensions.

Valkyrie Sky Starts Closed Beta in Korea

Here’s good news to all MMOSTG fans in the shmup world! Let’s make way for Valkyrie Sky developed by Yolim Communication coming from Korea. Valkyrie Sky began its first closed beta last December 19 in South Korea.

Valkyrie Sky is a cross between MMO and shoot-em-up game. Get to do fun MMO stuff such as picking a class, designing your character, finding quests and joining parties. It consists of the good old Shoot Em Up style with a twist of summoning spells and MMO magic. The RPG elements make this game interesting where leveling up characters and doing quests, with shooting game elements like dodging and shooting are enabled. Create maps and share them with other players in this 2d shooter. Players can easily arrange monsters they found on the map to set up routes and rewards. Some other places to seek adventure in Valykrie Sky are villages, auction houses, fishing farms and other types of community facilities.

Valkyrie Sky is the type of MMO quite old school yet so refreshingly new.

Crash Commando arrives on PSN in just in time for the new year

Hands down to developer Epos and freshly released Playstation Store-exclusive Crash Commando. Crash Commando is as straightforward as it gets in a fast- paced mode for up to 12 players. The Playstation Network (PSN) opens up the new year of 2009 with an explosive and addicting game with plenty of ways to approach a match. Clearly there’s something here for everyone.

Crash Commando gives a twist on the 2d side scroller in many ways beginning with the multiplayer focus. It features two teams battling on dual-sided levels. The game is mainly 2d in nature with the use of the left analog stick moving your soldier while the right aims your weapon. You navigate a red or blue colored soldier between two parallel 2D planes. A variety of elements, to name a few are jetpacks, vehicles, pickups, to keep things fresh. One of the coolest elements of the game is the flexibility it provides through a jetpack. Simply press and hold L1 will send you hovering into the air. It then rests fast enough as if you almost have free-form movement. The vehicles equipped with jetpacks makes them more mobile than usual, makes navigating through levels much more easily. The platforms found in most levels can be used as cover, pilot vehicles to run over your enemies and turrets that you can use to shoot enemies on the other side of the level.

This 2d shooter places weapons and load outs of highest importance as any combat-focused game is. You can select between six primary weapons whether at the start of a match or after you die – a couple secondary weapons and the type of grenade or mine you wish to carry. Other weapons come in handy and only found in level that you can’t pick form the list such as deadly plasma rifle. Outstanding primary weapon offerings are limited to machinegun, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, sniper rifle, shotgun and the heat gun-esque CAB, while pistol or knife as secondary and couple various grenade and mine types for your third slot.

The dominant weapon out of all weapons in Crash Commando is perhaps the rocket launcher. It can be a mighty companion for direct shots but is slow to reload and splash damage isn’t exactly powerful as a direct hit. From the looks of it, the machinegun sure beats the rocket launcher because its constant fire permits you to adjust your aim on the fly. An interesting weapon is the CAB that basically fries your opponents after locking it on your opponents for awhile to actually take them out. The grenade launcher is deadly to your enemies and yourself. Yes, it could harm you given its rounds are slow to travel and can bounce off a wall and back to your face. Finally, there’s the sniper rifle that may sound like the dominant weapon out of the collection. It may really lead to some unfair fights for skilled players. It can be roughly a one-shot one-kill weapon provided you wearing armor. Be careful as this sniper rifle can get tricky to hit a shot due to its long reload times.

The success of Crash Commando lies in the satisfying burst of misty, red blood accompanying every kill. This 2d shooter gets a thumb up on several arenas. It succeeds in creating a fast-paced and super highly addictive multiplayer combat game. It is a basic looking game but the art direction works with the feel of heavy blood-letting. Forget about dealing with being stuck with empty servers since Crash Commando can be played against bots. The obvious downsides – the camera may not be your best friend and the pace is focused on the precision of the weapons that suffer from huge disadvantage. This multiplayer shooter pretty much appeal to anyone looking for a fun and addictive experience.
